Insight Report: Enhanced Domestic Monitoring

Overview

This report covers the work of the three enhanced profiling test cells studying disaggregated load, hot water and storage heating which provide detailed consumption profiles by appliance or circuit for a range of domestic customers.

Test cell 2a involved enhanced monitoring of customers disaggregated domestic loads and overall consumption. The domestic loads monitored for the CLNR project included: lighting, consumer electronics, the cooker, kitchen appliances, washing appliances and refrigeration. The trial duration was 12 months and included all seasons

Test cell 10aHW (referred to as TC2aHW in some CLNR documents) involved enhanced monitoring of domestic customers with immersion hot water and an Economy 7/10 tariff. The data gathered includes both the temperature and power consumption of the immersion heater.

Test cell 11aSH (referred to as TC2a HW+SH) involved enhanced monitoring of domestic customers with both immersion hot water heating and electric storage heating on an Economy 7/10 tariff. The data gathered includes power consumption for both the immersion heater and storage heater.

These trials were designed to provide the data needed to develop:

  • a greater understanding of how future economic, social and technological trends are likely to affect the patterns of the various components of load and generation;
  • an improved set of load profiles; and
  • a greater understanding of the degree to which customers who have accepted a proposition for flexibility then respond.
