British Gas
British Gas is the UK’s leading energy supplier, providing eight million domestic and commercial customers with gas and electricity. It has the lowest carbon intensity of any of the major UK energy suppliers in terms of tonnes of CO2 emitted per megawatt hour of electricity supplied to customers.
British Gas is at the forefront of finding cleaner ways of generating energy and helping Britain use less. It focuses on delivering
smart meters,
microgeneration products, electric cars and renewable solutions for communities, which puts customers in control of their energy use
British Gas is proud to work alongside Northern Powergrid, Durham University and EA Technology to bring a breadth of expertise to deliver on this important project, which will ultimately help the UK towards its carbon targets and help consumers with their bills. The results will help British Gas to develop the best energy efficiency solutions for its customers and make sure the electricity networks can handle the mass introduction of
solar panels,
electric cars and other green technology.
As the UK’s largest energy supplier, British Gas will be responsible for recruiting and supporting customers involved in the trial. It will install
smart meters into around 14,000 customer homes to capture data from trials. Hundreds of these homes will have solar PV panels, or electric car charging points, or ground-source or air-source
heat pumps, or
micro combined heat and power systems – boilers which generate electricity while they heat the home.
According to Phil Bentley, Managing Director of British Gas:
“With tough climate targets to meet, and volatile wholesale energy markets, it is vital that Britain makes the transition to a low carbon economy – and no single company has all the answers. British Gas is leading the way in smart meters in smart homes, but now we’re teaming up with a unique set of partners who will help deliver the largest smart grid project the UK has seen.”
