Northern Powergrid
Northern Powergrid is the electricity distribution business for the northeast, Yorkshire and parts of northern Lincolnshire, delivering electricity on behalf of suppliers from generators, mainly on the national transmission system, to 3.8 million domestic and business customers.
Covering an area of 25,000 square kilometres, Northern Powergrid’s network extends from north Northumberland, south to the Humber and northern Lincolnshire, and from the east coast to the Pennines. The network consists of more than 31,000 substations and around 91,000 kilometres of overhead line and underground cables.
Increasingly, with the drive to reduce the country’s carbon emissions, generation is connecting more and more directly to our distribution network and customers are becoming more diverse, with some of them generating their own electricity and others using technology such as
heat pumps and electric vehicles that places new demands on our network.
Northern Powergrid has been at the forefront of thinking about the issues raised for many years and so the Customer-Led Network Revolution project is a natural development of this work.
