Monitoring Electricity Consumption
A comprehensive customer recruitment and engagement process by British Gas has enabled us to collect data from thousands of domestic and SME customers, through a range of new monitoring and metering arrangements. The data is being analysed by the teams at Durham and Newcastle Universities to create an up-to-date set of load profiles which could inform the future design and planning of UK electricity networks.
Why are we doing this?
We want to understand how today’s consumers’ are using and generating electricity. We will use the data we collect to create an up-to-date set of load profiles and recommendations, which can be used to update existing industry standards last produced more than 30 years ago.
Key Facts and Figures

What have we learned so far?
We have collected data from thousands of domestic and SME electricity customers, through a range of monitoring and metering arrangements. We have used this data to create new profiles which will help inform the industry’s current understanding of electricity consumption patterns, across a range of different customer and demographic groups.
The datasets and a guide to load and generation profiles were published in August 2014, these can be accessed below. Analysis of the data and further outputs to assist distribution network operators to change their working practices are due for release throughout the remainder of 2014. By releasing the supporting data now, we are offering the opportunity for researchers and other interested parties to begin working with the data.
