Distributed Generation

We have been looking at the profiles of a small number of wind farm, landfill generation, hydro generation and co-generation trial participants within the Northern Powergrid operating area.

Why are we doing this?

Installed capacities of distributed generation, that is generation embedded in distribution networks, are projected to increase substantially in Great Britain (GB) and many other power systems. This is largely due to incentives to encourage the uptake of low carbon technologies at all voltage levels of the power system, from domestic properties to higher distribution voltages. We want to understand whether it is possible to create a new set of load profiles for the different types of new electricity generation that exist.

What have we learned so far?

The concept of a generation profile has been investigated with results gained for a variety of generation types. We have found that it is possible to generate profiles: these have been presented for wind turbines, landfill generation, hydro generation and a number of cogeneration sites. New results will be available later this year to substantiate the profiles and we are reviewing customer interviews to refresh existing results. Technical work has begun on configuration factors and this is ongoing.
