anaerobic digestion
Anaerobic digestion is used to manage waste and/or to release energy. It is a series of processes in which microorganisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen.
Anaerobic digestion is a renewable energy source as the process produces a methane and carbon dioxide-rich biogas, suitable for energy production, helping to replace fossil fuels. This biogas can be burned to provide electricity or heat, or both.
Anaerobic digestion reduces the amount of organic matter going to land-fill where it would decompose and emit methane which has a global warming effect 23 times greater than carbon dioxide. It also reduces the amount of organic matter that might otherwise be dumped at sea.
