micro combined heat
and power
Micro CHP is a heating technology which is used primarily for space and water heating, but which also generates electricity at the same time. Typically, it is used instead of a gas boiler in a central heating system, although micro CHP can also be based on liquefied petroleum gas, oil or biofuels.
It's not a renewable technology if it burns fossil fuels (such as gas) to produce space and water heating. However, it is efficient because it increases the total energy utilisation of the fuel used as it simultaneously generates electricity.
Most of the savings are achieved through a ‘generate-and-resell’ model. Where the power generated by the micro CHP is more than the household needs, the excess can be sold back to the electrical network.
