biomass
Biomass systems burn wood to create heat. It is a low carbon option as the CO2 emitted when wood fuel is burned is the same as the amount that was absorbed over the previous months and years when the plant was growing. As long as new plants continue to grow in place of those used for fuel, the process is sustainable.
There are two types of system:
- The wood-fuelled boiler, which is connected to a central heating and hot water system
- The wood-fuelled stove, which is usually positioned in the fireplace, and gives off warm air to heat a single room.
For this technology to be suitable for you, space is the main practical consideration. You need to have enough space for the boiler, a large enough dry area beside the boiler to store the wood fuel and space to deliver this wood fuel to the store.
