keeping your bills down
It is an unfortunate fact of life that the cost of electricity is going to go up as we move to a lower carbon economy. So we need to find ways of using it which keep the cost down. This is particularly important if you have switched to equipment such as heat pumps or an electric car, which uses more electricity than today’s typical household.
Fortunately, help is at hand. The cost of producing electricity and moving it around depends on how many other people want to use it at the same time. We make best use of power stations and the electricity network – and keep the cost down - by spreading our use of electricity over the day and night. Heating your house using off peak electricity and night store heaters has long made sense for people who live off the gas main.
But few people want to spend time watching the meter to find the cheapest time to wash the dishes. Using smart meters together with smart appliances means that you can let the meter take the strain. Our project will find the best ways of developing smart households to keep down your electricity bill.
